“The Recess” by Navid Nikkhah Azad has been selected to compete in the International Short Film competition section of the 28th Adana Golden Boll Film Festival (Altın Koza International Film Festival) in Turkey, which took place from September 13-19, 2021.
Adana Golden Boll Film Festival is one of the most prestigious and long-established film festivals in Turkey. It was inspired by the legendary director Yilmaz Guney, the winner of Golden Palm for Yol (1982), at the wake of a new era which marked a divergence from the traditional cinema towards a political consciousness.
The Spanish-Iranian short drama “The Recess” has been officially selected in 160 international film festivals including FIAPF-accredited, Goya Awards qualifying festivals and Academy Award® qualifying festival around the world and has won 30 awards.
Directed and produced by Navid Nikkhah Azad and co-produced by Spanish producer Delia Guerra Parra and Mohammad Shahverdy, “The Recess” brings the story of the self-immolated Sahar Khodayari (Iranian Blue Girl) to life.
Inspired by true events, the movie follows Sahar, a 17-year-old student who is determined to skip high school during recess to go to the football stadium to watch a football match between Esteghlal F.C. vs. Al-Ain as part of the AFC Champions League in violation of the national ban on women entering football stadiums in Iran.
